A List of Questions for Your School

Wrote this today for StopCRT - kinda just came up with it off the top of my head. I saw the list that mom in Rhode Island did, and I thought it was OK, but too "branded" with CRT, and asked for irrelevant info like times and dates and other junk, which made it seem like she was asking them to do busy work.

All you really want to know is where the school stands philosophically on the core issues. You needn't use all these questions. Pick 10 of your favorites, you'll get enough. If they can't answer "yes" or "no" unequivocally, they need to give you detailed answers explaining WHY.

How many "Yes" answers = a red flag?
ONE. Yes, ONE.

Deb's List

Is it the position of the school (school board/district) that:

  • the nation's official founding was in 1619?
  • the USA an inherently racist/white supremacist country?
  • "Whiteness" is real, and can be defined as a list of traits, values, behaviors, all of which are 'problematic?'
  • a child must be made aware of their racial/gender identities, and how those give or deprive them of power in this society?
  • a child must be made aware of their racial/gender identities before they can learn to read, write and do math well, or better than they do now (that lack of awareness is the cause of the achievement gap)?
  • the academic achievement gap is a direct result of systemic racism in the country, the school, and whiteness in the curriculum?
  • students should be made aware of their status as victim or oppressor based on their identities?
  • students should be encouraged to be "active" in pushing for social, cultural and political change, with the end goal being "equity" of outcome in our society?
  • representative diversity in every discipline and classroom (in the teachers and the students) is more important to successful outcomes than merit, or any other factor?
  • merit is not real, but invented by white people for the purpose of oppressing black and brown people?
  • there are different ways of "knowing," and the scientific method is only ONE of those ways?
  • the canon should be destroyed, and replaced with the writings and storytelling of non-white and indigenous people?
  • it is the role of government agencies (education especially) to promote and preserve cultures of origin?
  • it is the role of teachers to help students question or "unlearn" the values instruction of their parents?
  • it is the role of teachers to help students identify their "intrinsic bias," and that teachers have the authority to determine if a student is doing that properly, or well?
  • equity, diversity and inclusion can coexist in the same system?
  • capitalism is oppressive, and must be eliminated and replaced with socialism?
  • the American flag is a symbol of white supremacy?
  • the nuclear family is oppressive, and a symbol of white supremacy?
  • outcomes or "impact" is more important than intentions?
  • white people cannot experience racism because they hold power by virtue of their skin color?
  • black people are always on the receiving end of racism simply by interacting with white people and American values and culture, all of which evolved from whiteness?
  • freedom of speech is problematic and supports oppression?*
  • equality under the law is problematic because it permits white people to hold too much power and property in the society (both of which create privilege for all white people)?
  • every disparity between white and black or brown people is the result of white supremacy/racism?
  • white people who question the view that racism is inherent in every interaction with them are demonstrating their white fragility, and offering proof of the necessity of more "social emotional learning" lessons?
  • minor children should have the right to consent to change their sex surgically without parental consent?
  • teachers should be able to encourage students to "critically examine" whether they really are the gender they were "assigned at birth?"
  • teachers should refer to their gender or sex as "assigned at birth?"
  • AP and advanced math perpetuate systems of oppression, and must be eliminated, or the merit based tests to participate in these programs eliminated to reduce disparities in numbers of students who are asian/white/black and brown?
  • every class, and every discipline should be taught through an anti-racist "lens," in order to achieve equity?
  • black and brown children cannot succeed or improve academically unless white people "do the work" of decentering whiteness, and become "less white?"
  • individualism is selfish and problematic; group work and group affiliation is the desired higher value?
  • affinity groups by race in school for socializing or extra-curricular activities is not only fine, it's desirable?
  • parents lack the expertise and wisdom to know what their children need psychologically/emotionally/socially?
  • if schools don't teach anti-racism, white children will grow up to be racist without even realizing it?
  • fixation on the core curriculum, the classics, and objective reality is racist/white supremacist?
