The alphabet matters because words that use it matter to the cultures that use these languages, and without the symbols (alphabet) with which to express those words to others who are far away, or across the years from us, we literally cannot express ourselves and be understood.
Why is this controversial? What other culture on Earth questions the value of its own symbols to its own people. I assure you, the Chinese choose to learn ours as well as their own, rather than question the value of their own.
This kind of deconstruction of reality--questioning the value of things developed over thousands of years to serve the needs of people embracing reality--is no less than an effort to deny that reality.
This must not make its way down to our kids.
